Young Scientists Programme (YSP)
Young Scientists Programme, formerly named the Scholars’ Programme, was introduced in 2007. The Young Scientists Programme is a privileged programme that develops high-achieving Science students in critical thinking and problem solving, so as to prepare them to handle real-world problems of the 21st Century, through innovation and inquiry. Through the gargantuan of partnerships and collaborations with various educational institutions, the Young Scientists Programme seeks to provide exposure and substantial learning opportunities for its students in the area of Science.
Our vision
A community of passionate, independent and self-directed leaders capable of empowering their peers towards academic achievement and being active contributors towards their community.
Our mission
To provide a learning platform for our students to ignite their passion, stretch their critical thinking and problem-solving skills and extend their learning to science-related careers.
To achieve this mission, we engaged several strategies:
- To develop students with the aptitude and attitude for Science
- To provide opportunities for students to become active contributors who initiate and lead projects beyond the curriculum
- To provide exposure through STRETCH programmes and competitions
Leadership Framework of Young Scientists Programme
During this 3-year journey, we provide different platforms for them to serve and lead the school and community in the areas of science and technology.
Secondary 2 | Serving the school and community YSP students will build on the curriculum knowledge of water quality and environmental issues that they have learnt in their Secondary 1 Science to embark on further Science Research projects on the water-feature pond. The YSP students will also learn to serve the school by taking care of the pond, the Rance, and leading through sharing of their knowledge with their peers and juniors. It also aims to nurture and challenge them to become leaders in taking charge of the school environment and taking responsibilities in contributing to others’ learning through sharing. The pond would also allow students to co-construct part of the eco features, which would cultivate greater sense of ownership and servant leadership in our students. |
Secondary 3 | Leading the school and community The Secondary 3 YSP will craft suitable enrichment workshops to engage the community (AES students, primary school students, community partners, overseas visitors, APS, Cluster schools, Churches, Boys Town). Using the Ignite Hub! which will be the venue for the workshops, the YSP students will create and facilitate suitable workshops that will enable them to share their learning experiences from the water-feature pond. Ignite Hub! is a versatile venue that resembles a “Makerspace” for students to ignite their creativity and curiosity as they learn more about everyday Science phenomenon. |
Secondary 4 | Inspiring the school and community As the seniors of the school, they are given the ownership to plan, organise and execute the AES Learning Festival. We hope that through this learning process, they are able to inspire their juniors and empower their peers towards academic achievement and being active contributors towards their community. |
Our students have the opportunity to participate and lead in internal school events and external competitions.
- Cluster Science Enrichment Day
- A day where students from different schools gather together to learn science beyond their classrooms, YSP students will plan an conduct a workshop to the students.
- Learning Journeys
- The YSP students will have the opportunity to attend science-related workshops or activities to continue to spur their interest and motivation in science.
- Science Read
- A pair of Young Scientists will prepare and share with the school a short presentation on one reading article each week.
- Workshops
- The YSP students are empowered to brainstorm and conduct scientific workshops to the school and community.
Below are some of external competitions and programmes that a student may take part in as an YSP student:
